The third annual IP (Intellectual Property) Forum took place in Warsaw on March 8-12, 2010. The IP Forum is organized by IP Management Poland, which is headed by Bogusław Węgliński, and sponsored by six leading Polish universities and several trade associations, as well the European Union. The three USPTC board members attending and presenting were Jerzy Orkiszewski, USPTC president and engineering director of biotech company Cutera, Clay Bullwinkel, the Forum’s co-chairperson and managing member of Silicon Valley Flow, LLC, and Krzysztof Świtalski.

Last year’s IP Forum had many renowned speakers led by Jerzy Buzek, now president of the European Parliament. This year again did not disappoint. Many industrial, academic and government leaders from Poland, the U.S., Norway and other countries presented and discussed the importance of proper management of intellectual property in the process of technology and product research and development. Three Silicon Valley-based experts on IP management and university R & D agreements played the key roles in the forum’s workshop.

These were Kirsten Leute from Stanford University’s Office to Technology Licensing (OTL), Lynne Hollyer of University of California’s Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA), and Patrick Sullivan, industry IP management consultant and noted author from Intellectual Capital Management Group, LLC.

There was a lively and exciting contest of start-up pitches by students and judged by a panel of experts with awards given and a grand prize of travel to Trondheim, Norway. Friday the 12th there were awards given for a Polish inventors hall of fame, and to Polish companies with outstanding records of innovation. To cap off the week, in the hall of the Warsaw Stock Exchange there was a concert of music plus comedy by the renowned Grupa Mocarta, and a gala dinner.
